Twelve Morningside College students and one Morningside College professor were initiated into the Morningside College chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education, during a special ceremony held last Sunday, April 10, on the Morningside College campus. New chapter officers were also elected during the ceremony.
Marilyn Heilman, education department chair and chapter counselor, welcomed members and conducted the installation of new officers. Rachel Redig, Morningside College senior and chapter president, conducted the initiation of new members. Guest speaker for the event was Dr. Rita Vannatta, principal of Bryant Elementary School in Sioux City and the 2005 Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year.
New initiates and their positions include:
Sioux City: Elizabeth Barrett; Angela Dunlop; Jennifer Dziurawiec, treasurer; Trisha Gallardo, historian; Catherine Posey; Alethea Joelle Stout; and Denise Wiener.
Iowa: Alicia Baier, Sergeant Bluff; Lisa Cunningham, vice-president, Anthon; Gina Lamp, Akron; Joan Nielsen, assistant professor of education, Battle Creek; and Melanie Stocks, secretary, Oelwein.
Kappa Delta Pi member Michelle Schneider of Merrill, Iowa, was elected as president of the local chapter.
Kappa Delta Pi elects to membership those who exhibit the ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in teaching and allied professions. Selection as a member of Kappa Delta Pi is based on high academic achievement, a commitment to education as a career, and a professional attitude that assures steady growth in the profession.
