Two Morningside College students and their faculty advisor wrote an article that was published in the December issue of the Journal of Young Investigators.
Justin Anderson and Brice Buryanek, now Morningside graduates, wrote the article with Aaron Bunker, assistant professor of biology. It examines whether pre-exercise drinks like creatine and Red Bull have different effects for men and women on forearm skeletal muscle fatigue.
“This research started in class and became an independent research project,” Bunker said. “It was presented at state and national conferences, and now it is a published paper. It is great to see a class project flourish into a great scientific study that goes to meetings and gets published.”
Anderson, son of Dan and Gina Roupe of Sioux City, is now a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Buryanek, son of Bill and Sharilyn Buryanek of Hawarden, Iowa, is now a student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy in Omaha.
Bunker joined the faculty at Morningside College in the fall of 2010. He has a doctorate in biomedical sciences with a minor in college teaching from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The Journal of Young Investigators is a student-led initiative to broaden the undergraduate scientific experience, allowing students to participate in the scientific review and publication processes of its peer-reviewed undergraduate journal. It represents over 50 different academic institutions from over half a dozen countries.
