Christmas at Morningside 2011

Morningside College to present Christmas at Morningside concert on Nov. 30

Morningside College will present its 17th annual Christmas at Morningside concert on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave. The concert is free and open to the public. Doors to Eppley Auditorium will open at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s concert features the premiere of the original choral and instrumental composition “Break Forth, O Heavenly Light” by Ben Allaway, director of music and worship and composer-in-residence at First Christian Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Commissioning of “Break Forth, O Heavenly Light” was made possible in part by a gift from Morningside graduate Edwin Mitchell of Alton, Iowa, in memory of his wife Marian, also a Morningside graduate and a longtime music educator. Gifts from Mitchell family members and friends also contributed to the commission.

Allaway’s compositions have been performed by choirs at St. Olaf College, Luther College, Wartburg College and Westminster Choir College. Allaway’s music also has been featured on programs with the Dalai Lama, Garrison Keillor, Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Hal Holbrook, Thomas Friedman, Simon Estes, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Jamie Bernstein and Buffy Sainte-Marie.

Christmas at Morningside will feature Morningside College choral and instrumental ensembles performing a variety of new and traditional music. The First Presbyterian Church Choir and the Siouxland Master Chorale will perform with college singers in the Morningside College Choral Union.

Tim Watson and Jill Wilson, assistant professors of music, direct the Morningside College Choral Union, Singing Men of Morningside, Bel Canto Singers, Morningside College Choir and Eclectix Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Instrumental ensembles that will perform include the Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Wilson Wise, assistant professor of music and director of bands, and the Morningside Brass Ensemble under the direction of Tony Hutchins, instructor of music and director of instrumental jazz.
