The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Council of Presidents has selected Morningside College President John Reynders as its chair-elect, effective Jan. 1, 2014, and as its chair, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
The NAIA Council of Presidents (COP) comprises institutional chief executive officers who are elected to represent conferences, independent institutions and members at-large. The COP chair, chair-elect and three members of the council serve on the executive committee.
Reynders, who served this past year as a member of the COP executive committee, will succeed the current NAIA COP chair, Les Purce, president of Evergreen State College, Olympia, Wash., in 2015.
"This is a great opportunity for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) to have one of our presidents serve as chair of the NAIA COP,” said Corey Westra, GPAC commissioner. “The GPAC prides itself in what we do as an affiliated conference of the NAIA, and John will serve us well in his roles as chair-elect and chair."
The GPAC is an affiliated conference of the NAIA and consists of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.
Reynders became president of Morningside College in 1999 after serving as vice president for administrative services and treasurer at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. He also had served at Allegheny as director and dean of enrollment planning and financial aid, special assistant to the provost, associate director of athletics, associate professor of physical education, instructor in mathematics and head men's basketball coach.
