The Mustangs edged Northwestern by one stroke to win the team title at the Briar Cliff/Morningside Invitational men’s golf tournament.

Morningside College posted a one-stroke victory margin over runner-up Northwestern College to win the team championship at Monday’s Briar Cliff/Morningside Invitational men’s golf tournament held at Whispering Creek Golf Club.

The Mustangs finished with a team total of 309 to edge the Red Raiders by one stroke in a field that also included Briar Cliff and Dordt College.
Matt Young, a senior from Kingsley, Iowa, led the Mustangs with a one-over par 73 for runner-up medalist honors behind Northwestern’s Neil Malenke, who carded a two-under par 70.

The Mustangs’ Cole Schwarz, a senior from Silver Lake, Kan., finished third in the individual standings with a 76. Morningside’s Matt Pitts, a senior from Cherokee, Iowa; Keegan Bak, a junior from Hinton, Iowa; and Christian Nohr, a freshman from Crofton, Neb., all tied for fifth with rounds of 80.

Morningside will compete in the Northwestern Invitational on Tuesday, April 8, in Orange City, Iowa.
