Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, recently gave lectures in Olympia, Greece, and Seoul, South Korea.

Reid gave two lectures in Olympia, Greece. She was an invited speaker at the International Olympic Academy. Her talk was on “Kalokagathia: Understanding Olympic Ethics as Beautiful Goodness.” She also gave a talk called “Fairness, Technology and the Aesthetics of Olympic Sport” at the International Conference of the Olympic Center for Philosophy and Education.

Reid was also invited to give a series of lectures at Seoul National University in South Korea. She focused on “The Ethics of Excellence,” which looked at the Greek idea of “arête” and the importance of virtue in sports. She also discussed “Sport and Globalization,” which stressed the need to preserve multiculturalism and diversity in international sports.

Reid is a specialist in ancient philosophy and the philosophy of sport. She has published six books related to sports philosophy and the Olympics. She is currently completing the National Endowment for the Humanities/Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. A member of the Morningside faculty since 1996, she received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
