Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, recently had a chapter published in a book in Viterbo, Italy.

Her chapter, “Sport, Education, and the Meaning of Victory,” discusses the importance of keeping the virtues of self-knowledge, discipline, courage and justice in modern athletics. Reid argues that winning, although a major focus, should not allow these virtues to fall by the wayside. The chapter appears in the book “Philosophy, Sport and Education: International Perspectives.” This book develops an international debate on the educational nature of sport from a philosophical point of view.

Reid is a specialist in ancient philosophy and the philosophy of sport. She has published six books related to sports philosophy and the Olympics. She is currently completing the National Endowment for the Humanities/Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. A member of the Morningside faculty since 1996, she received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
