“I hope to be that go-to person, or that person that everyone can say knows the answers to anyone’s questions and is there for those around me.

My name is Reagan Milton. I’m from Sioux City, Iowa, and my major is Biomedical Sciences with a focus in Pre-med but I came in as a nursing major. I discovered that I wanted to change to a major in biomedical sciences from my nursing classes. I love my nursing classes, but I realized that I wanted to focus so much more on the diagnosis, treatment, and research aspect of healthcare. I wanted to do the whole nine yards and get myself to medical school and get my doctorate to be an ER doctor one day.

I’ve known since middle school that I wanted to do healthcare. I’ve always been interested in all the different things that can happen day-to-day in healthcare. It’s uncharted territory, and I also have always wanted to help people. I’ve always been so focused on that, and my dream has been to go to medical school, but I never knew I could actually go through with it.

I doubted myself, but I was talking to my mom one day, and I said, ‘What if I just actually did it?’ as a joke. But she replied, ‘Well, what if you actually DID do it.’ And so we started reaching out to people, and I talked to some family friends about what it would look like. I reached out to Katie Koithan in The Krone Center and talked about what my plan would look like if I could still graduate on time, and I found out I could do it. During the whole process of switching my major, I had so many resources to turn to, and so many people willing to help me with it. My nursing advisor was really good about it and my new advisor for my new major helped too. In general, everyone wanted to make what was best for me happen.

I also am a student assistant with the women’s basketball team, in student government, Woo Crew and ODK, I’m a peer mentor, I’m a part of the pre-professional health club, and I am an admissions ambassador.

I like being that go-to person for people in recruitment and as a peer mentor I’m here to help the freshmen get acclimated or just find their footing in college, which is such a hard thing to do. The fact that I can help them do that makes me feel good.

I also have really enjoyed being a part of Woo Crew because it’s not at every school you’re going to have all these random people cheering you on because you’re coming to Morningside. It creates such a good environment for all these freshmen who are scared and nervous and they’ve never been in college before.

Just go for it. Even if you just put your foot in the door and see your options, you never know what you’re actually capable of. You have all these resources at Morningside, take advantage of them.”
