Moving to a new country for college is no small feat. It’s exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of opportunity—sometimes all at once. At Morningside University, we understand what an incredible step you’re taking, and we’re here to make the transition as smooth as possible. That’s why we’ve gathered these 8 tips from a current international student—insights that will inspire and reassure you as you begin this remarkable chapter of your life.

  1. Ask about everything – Starting fresh in a new country and college can feel overwhelming at times. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—whether it’s about classes, campus resources, or just where to find the dining hall. Morningside staff, faculty, and your fellow students are here to help make you feel at home.
  2. Check your documentation – Before leaving home, double-check that you have all the required documents for your time in the United States. This includes your valid passport, visa, I-20 form, and any additional documents requested by Morningside’s admissions or international student services team. Pro tip: Keep physical AND digital copies of these key documents. Store digital backups in a secure place like Google Drive or Dropbox for easy access in case you need them.
  3. Do your research – It’s always better to know what to expect! Spend time exploring Morningside’s website for campus photos, facilities information, and details about your residence hall. Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook are also great ways to get a feel for daily life at Morningside.
  4. Start connecting before you arrive– You don’t have to wait until orientation to start building your community. Reach out to fellow students through social media, join group chats for incoming students, or connect with your future roommates.
  5. Bring some meaningful things from home – Adjusting to life in a new country can bring waves of homesickness, but small pieces of home can make a huge difference. Bring items that remind you of where you come from, such as photos, a favorite snack, or even traditional decor.
  6. Prepare for culture differences – Cultural differences are a natural part of moving to a new country, and the United States is no exception. Approach these differences with an open mind. Be curious, ask questions, and try to adapt as you go.
  7. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed – Moving to a new country and starting college is a big step. It’s completely normal to feel homesick, nervous, or even overwhelmed at times. Talking through your experiences with someone who understands can help you manage stress and build resilience.
  8. Be proud of yourself – Stepping out of your comfort zone and moving so far from home to pursue your education is no small feat. Take time to recognize your bravery, adaptability, and determination.

Each experience, whether joyful or challenging, is helping you grow immensely as a person. Celebrate every milestone along the way, from making new friends to acing your first assignment. You’re accomplishing something extraordinary.
