Two Morningside College professors recently had an article published on “Tax Issues Facing a Surviving Spouse.”

The article by Mark C. Nielsen, assistant professor of accounting, and James M. Hopkins, retired professor of accounting, appeared in the October issue of Practical Tax Strategies, a tax journal published by Thomson Reuters.

It discusses issues such as how to determine the tax return filing status, how to use various tax carryovers in the year of death, and how to apply certain dependency exemption requirements to determine whether a surviving spouse can use the qualified widow or widower filing status.

Both Nielsen and Hopkins are certified public accountants.
