Morningside College’s 2016 Waitt Lecture will feature Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN’s international affairs program “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” The lecture at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave., is free and open to the public.

Zakaria’s lecture, “The Rise of the Rest: The Post-American World,” will explore what it means to live in a truly global era with the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia and many others.

Zakaria is widely respected for his probing analysis and ability to spot economic and political trends. His Emmy-nominated CNN program, which also received a 2012 Peabody Award, features panel discussions and one-on-one interviews with heads of state, intellectuals and business leaders. He has written the best-selling books “The Future of Freedom” (2003), “The Post-American World” (2008) and “In Defense of a Liberal Education” (2015). In addition, he was editor of Newsweek International from 2000 to 2010 and editor-at-large at Time from 2010 to 2014.

Norman Waitt Jr., a 1986 Morningside graduate and a member of the Morningside College Board of Directors, established the Waitt Lecture Series at Morningside College in 1997. Recent lecturers have included “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd, presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Yale Law School professor Stephen Carter, economist/humorist Ben Stein, and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.
