ORANGE CITY, IOWA – A free kick goal less than nine minutes from the end of regulation lifted Morningside College to a seventh win in its last eight contests Saturday, Oct. 20.
Sophomore midfielder Julius Fassbinder’s (Freiburg, Germany) second score of the season and first game-winning strike led head coach Tom Maxon’s crew to a pivotal Great Plains Athletic Conference road decision against rival Northwestern College. Senior goalkeeper Tim Erdmann (Hamburg, Germany) and the Maroon and White defense made it stand up forging the program’s fourth shutout of the season. Erdmann registered his sixth victory and second shutout in net.
The Mustangs, improving to 10-4-1 overall to mark the third time in the last four seasons they’ve reached double-digit victories and 8-1 in the GPAC, return home Wednesday, Oct. 24. Perennial league power Hastings College of Nebraska, ranked fourth on the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Association poll, visits Elwood Olsen Stadium for an 8 p.m. kickoff between the conference’s top two teams.
