First half flurry sends Mustangs to victory

MITCHELL, S.D. – Senior midfielders Merle Bublitz (Burgwedel, Germany) and Chloe Wetzbarger (Sioux City, Iowa) combined for three Morningside College goals in less than 40 minutes of the first half Saturday, Oct. 27.
Bublitz’ successful strike, occurring in the 22ndminute, was good for her 18thscore of the season. Wetzbarger added two more to the visitors’ side of the scoreboard at Dakota Wesleyan University’s Pepsi Soccer Complex in the 27thand 39thminute, to spotlight her first multiple-goal effort of the season, for a 3-0 Mustangs’ lead. The three offensive tallies were needed as the host Tigers clawed back within 3-2 with more than 20 minutes remaining the second frame before MC closed the door for a key regular season finale victory.
Head coach Tom Maxon’s program (10-7-1 overall, 8-4 GPAC), compiling double digit victories for the third time in the last four years, moves into GPAC postseason tournament play next week.
