Andrew Steele, former head writer for “Saturday Night Live,” will talk about comedy writing at Morningside College at noon Friday, Feb. 24, in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center. The event is part of the Friday is Writing Day Series at Morningside College.

Andrew Steele, former head writer for “Saturday Night Live,” will talk about comedy writing at Morningside College at noon Friday, Feb. 24, in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.

An Iowa native, Steele will be in town for the Sioux City International Film Festival. Steele is currently the creative director of Funny or Die, a comedy production company founded by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy.

His talk is part of the Friday is Writing Day (FIWD) series at Morningside College. FIWD meets throughout the spring semester, usually from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Fridays. The program, which has been in existence for almost 30 years, is designed to feature writers and their works, from journals to published pieces.

Writers of all types from the campus and community read their work, followed by informal discussions of the writing. All of the sessions are free and open to the public.

Lorenzo Sandoval, who is in residence on campus for the spring semester as a Dimmitt Fellow, will read from his play adaptation of Mark Twain’s life and writings and discuss adaptations of classics for the stage. Feb. 17 – Preaching and Speeching, Slamming and Jamming. This session will celebrate the art of slam poetry. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

Wednesday, March 1 – Religion and Popular Culture. Bruce Forbes, professor of religious studies, co-edited a book of essays on religion and popular culture. He will read from a revised edition and discuss book editing and collaboration. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

March 17 – Feeding a Population of 9 Billion by 2050. Students from the History of Food and Agriculture class with Tom Paulsen, associate professor and chair of the applied agricultural and food studies program, will read from papers in progress on this topic. March 24 – Writing Public History. Students from the Survey of Public History course with Adam Fullerton, library director and assistant professor, will present the types of writing done by public historians. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

March 31 – Writing for the Web. Rich Yates, assistant professor of art, and his students will show examples and discuss how to write effectively for websites. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

April 7 – Library Fan Fiction Writing Contest. Finalists in the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center’s writing contest will present their short fan fiction. A winner will be chosen from the finalists and awards given. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

April 21 – Genocides of Our Time. Students in Rabbi Guy Greene’s class will read research and reflection papers on genocides. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

Wednesday, April 26. Creative Edge Ad Club Presentation. The club will present its 2017 marketing campaign for Werner Fleet Sales. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.

April 28 – Kiosk Celebration. Get the latest issue of the college’s art and literary magazine. Winners of the art and literary competitions will share their work. Noon, Helen Levitt Art Gallery, Eppley Fine Arts Building, 3625 Garretson Ave.
