Finals week can be stressful, but you can make it through with the right strategies and performance. It is natural to feel the pressure that comes with taking exams but don’t let the stress take over your ability to focus and perform well. Here are some simple tips to help you survive and thrive during this hectic time.
- Start Early & Create a Schedule
- Don’t cram at the last minute! Start studying at least a week before finals. The earlier you start studying, the better. This gives you plenty of time to go over your materials and ask for help on subjects you are struggling with. Break up your study time into chunks by focusing on one subject at a time and creating a schedule to stay on track. By pacing yourself, you will reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed and build confidence as you check things off of your to-do list.
- Active Learning
- Don’t just read your notes—engage with them! Active learning is one of the most effective ways to retain information. After reviewing your notes, try summarizing key points in your own words, using flashcards, or practicing with sample questions. Actively engaging with the material will help you remember things better.
- Take Care of Your Body
- Your body and brain are deeply connected. You can’t study effectively if you’re tired or hungry. Make sure you are fueling your body with foods that provide long-lasting energy and drink plenty of water. Your brain needs rest to process information effectively. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night to keep your brain sharp. During the day, take breaks, stretch, and get some fresh air. Physical activity helps to refresh your mind and body, allowing you to return to studying with more energy.
- Find Your Best Study Spot
- Where you study can be just as important as how you study. Some people study well at home, while others need a quiet library or coffee shop. Find where you focus best and stick to it. Make sure to limit distractions – put your phone on silent and close unnecessary browser tabs.
- Ask for Help
- Ask your professors or classmates for help if you’re struggling with something, and take advantage of the additional resources available on campus. - Stay Positive and Manage Stress
- Stay calm and remember that you’ve got this. Take a few minutes to relax when stress hits, whether that’s deep breathing, a short walk, or just stepping away from your work for a bit.

- Focus on your hardest subjects first, but make sure to review all the material. After completing a study session, reward yourself with something small: a snack, a quick break, or a favorite activity.
