Karshuening earns first-team All-GPAC laurels
Tom Karshuening was named to the All-GPAC Men’s Soccer First Team.
Tom Karshuening, a sophomore midfielder from Satrup, Germany, was named to the 2016 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’ Soccer First Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.,
Karshuening was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer this season with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. He scored the game winning goal in three of the Mustangs’ 14 victories.
Karshuening earned All-GPAC recognition for the second time in his career after he was named to last year’s All-GPAC Second Team as a freshman.
In addition to Karshuening, the Mustangs placed Joao Soares and Paul Quildies on the All-GPAC Second Team.
Soares, a junior forward form Campinas, Brazil, led the Mustangs in scoring with a team-high 14 goals to go along with five assists for 33 points. He had six game winning goals to tie a school record first set by Brandon Wylie in 2004 and matched by Jesse Rodriguez last season. Soares’ 14 goals was the fourth highest single-season total in Morningside history and his 33 points was the fifth highest single season total in the Mustangs’ annals.
Quildies, a sophomore defender from Essen, Germany, is a defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to averages of 1.65 goals and 10.2 shots per game. Aside from his defensive exploits, Quildies contributed five points to the Mustangs’ offensive attack with two goals and an assist.
Morningside placed Reece Maxon and Juan Pablo Jochems on the All-GPAC honorable mention list.
Maxon, a senior defender from Mission Viejo, Calif., was the Mustangs’ fifth leading scorer with three goals and two assists for eight points.
Jochems, a sophomore midfielder from Ugchelen, Netherlands, scored six points with one goal and for assists.
Morningside posted a 14-5-1 record during the 2016 season for its second highest victory total in school history. The Mustangs finished fourth in the GPAC with a league record of 5-4.
