SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside University recently presented its 2024 Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Awards to Joan Shaputis, education director of operations and recommending official; Ryan Tellinghuisen ‘12, admissions counselor; Cindy Welp, associate vice president of human resources; Alex Struck ‘16, head men’s and women’s tennis coach; and Jen Dolphin, registrar. Dolphin was also named the 2024 Employee of the Year. Additionally, a number of faculty and staff were honored for their years of service to Morningside.

Joan Shaputis has been with Morningside since 2003, where she first worked in the library then moved to the Sharon Walker School of Education. Her peers pointed out her meticulous attention to detail, tireless work ethic, and ability to navigate complex challenges with grace and professionalism. She also cares deeply for their colleagues and students, adding to a positive working culture.

Ryan Tellinghuisen has worked as an admissions counselor since 2021. His energy, compassion, and unwavering dedication have profoundly impacted Morningside. Known for his contagious positivity and ability to connect meaningfully with others, Tellinghuisen exemplifies going above and beyond—whether guiding prospective students, mentoring peers, or creating extraordinary experiences with enthusiasm and heart.

Cindy Welp started at Morningside in 1999 in human resources. Welp’s care, organization, and genuine compassion make a profound impact on our community. With humility and grace, she approaches every task while ensuring others feel valued, understood, and supported.

Alex Struck

Alex Struck was named the Mustangs’ tennis coach in 2021. Last season, the men and the women won the regular season championship and the GPAC Tournament. Struck has made it a priority to bridge the relationship between academics and athletics in a collaborative spirit. Students and colleagues alike often describe him as approachable, supportive, and inclusive.

Jen Dolphin – also named the Employee of the Year – has been the school’s registrar since 2001. Over the past year, Dolphin has gone above and beyond to navigate complex transitions and ensure seamless operations that benefit students, staff, and faculty. Her unwavering professionalism, patience, and ability to manage countless responsibilities have made her a pillar of support and inspiration—earning her well-deserved recognition through numerous nominations for this award.

All Thomas S. Thompson Award recipients receive a cash bonus. Recipients are selected annually based on their demonstration of outstanding dedication, service, and commitment to Morningside and its students. The Thompson Staff Awards are funded by an endowment established in memory of Thomas S. Thompson, who served as president of Morningside from 1969 to 1978.

Morningside President Dr. Albert Mosley also recognized Morningside employees for their years of service.

Individuals who reached five years of service: Stacey Alex, assistant professor of humanities; Elizabeth Bohlmann ‘20, assistant director of admissions; Jenn Braunschweig, advising and disability services coordinator; Heather Gordon, graduate and student financial planning coordinator; Shelby Prindaville; associate professor of art; Amanda Stabile, custodian and Dan Wubbena, assistant professor of business.

Those recognized for 10 years of service: Beth Boettcher, dean of students; Jesse Cole, information technology infrastructure and operations manager; Mike Freeman, assistant vice president of institutional advancement; Anni Moore, associate professor of natural sciences; Orlando Rodriguez-Morales, custodian; and Tracy Sursely, graduate education enrollment manager and student advisor.

Individuals who garnered 15 years of service: Jodie Nieman, housekeeper, and Chris Spicer, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs.

Individuals who reached the 20-year mark: Sheri Hineman, director of residence life, and Casey Jacobsen, football co-defensive coordinator.

Individuals who have made 25 years of service: Lisa Krohn, administrative assistant to the president; Tom Maxon, head men’s and women’s soccer coach; and Cindy Welp, associate vice president of human resources.

Dr. Mosley also recognized those who reached the 30-and 35-year mark. Those four were: Bonnie Smith, business analyst (30); Patrick McKinlay, social sciences professor (30); Shari Benson, student life administrative coordinator (35); and Karen Wiese ’97, associate vice president for institutional research and director of student financial planning.
