Men’s and women’s cross country have strong showing at Briar Cliff Invitational
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams posted some of their fastest times of the season on Saturday, with seniors Allison Higgins and Anthony Patton leading.
Morningside’s women’s cross country team posted some of its best times of the season at Saturday’s Briar Cliff Invitational held at Adams Nature Preserve in North Sioux City, S.D.
The Mustangs placed fifth in a field of 14, with 92 total points and a total time of 1:35:11.88. Dordt had 59 points and a total time of 1:34:02.30 to earn the championship.
Senior Allison Higgins led the Mustangs, placing third overall with a time of 18:14.51. Two other Mustangs also ran in the 18s, with senior Cassie Warner taking 10th at 18:50.36 and senior Megan Maaske placing 11th with a 18:52.61 run. Junior Alex George ran 19:21.54 for 25th, and freshman Tenna Beel took the 47th spot with a 19:52.86.
Other times for the Mustang women’s team included freshman Morgan Roberts running 20:05.55, senior Rose Pelelo-Ray running a 20:05.55, sophomore Macie Moore running 20:07.28, freshman Rachel Barkema posting a 20:14.47, sophomore Krista Zavadil at 20:15.43, sophomore Clare Cortlever running a 20:24.37, freshman Jenna Dirkx posting a 20:43.69, freshman Kaley Rivera with a 21:52.84, and sophomore Hazel Zink with 26:56.97.
The men’s cross country team also had their best meet of the year. In a tough field of 12 teams, the men placed fourth with 124 points and a total time of 2:13:39.06, with Dordt taking the championship with 57 points and a total time of 2:10:38.37.
Senior Anthony Patton placed 9th in the individual standings, running a 25:56.67 8K, and sophomore Connor Ritz placed 14th with a 26:12:46. Sophomore Dylan Lindstrom posted a time of 26:39.59 for 24th place, freshman Zach Ambrose placed 41st with a 27:03.92, and freshman Michael Rizzi posted a 27:46.42 for 66th.
Other runners for the Mustang men included freshman Garrett Hanson with a 27:50.03, freshman Drake Beller with a 29:35.11, freshman Lane Ausdemore with a 30:26.89, freshman Ty Van Es with a 34:04.89, and freshman Damian Moreland with a 36:28.93.
Next up, cross country will head to the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton, S.D., on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m.
