Trumpet player Robert Baca, who has toured with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and percussionist and vocalist Steve Shininger, who has performed with the U.S. Air Force Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, will perform and serve as guest clinicians at the Morningside College Jazz Festival Feb. 4-6 in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.
Baca and Shininger will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 with the Morningside Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Jazz Combo in Eppley. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children ages 12 and under. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Morningside College Music Department at (712) 274-5210 or Ray’s Midbell Music at (712) 276-0351.
Baca is a past member of the radio ensemble for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” He has performed with orchestras, with artists such as Buddy Rich and Mel Tormé, and as a soloist in China, Europe and Costa Rica. He is on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where one of his ensembles has recorded 10 CDs. Six of those CDs received the Down Beat Award in the Best Big Band category, and two were nominated for a Grammy.
Shininger was an instrumental music teacher before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force Band as a percussionist. Later he created and fronted his own 12-piece ensemble, The ShinSings Orchestra, showcasing the music of Frank Sinatra, big band swing and classic pop and rock. The group performs throughout the Midwest – from Pennsylvania to Colorado – and Shininger has received accolades for his Sinatra vocal impersonation.
During the day Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 30 jazz bands from high schools in Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska will each perform a 20-minute set and participate in a clinic with Baca or Shininger. These sessions are free and open to the public.
