Erica Young of Fayette, Iowa, a 2017 graduate of Morningside College, has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
With her Fulbright award, Young will begin work in the spring of 2019 as an English teaching assistant at a university in Brazil. She will assist local English instructors and provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms, as well as serve as a cultural ambassador for the United States. Fulbright award recipients are selected as part of an annual competition that recognizes academic and professional achievement, record of service and leadership potential.
“The entire Morningside College community is immensely proud that Erica has been selected to participate in the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government,” said Morningside President John Reynders. “She joins the select group of Morningside graduates who have received a Fulbright award in the past.”
The last Morningside graduate to receive a Fulbright award was Mallory Sea of Sioux City in the spring of 2017.
Young participated in overseas study experiences as an undergraduate international affairs, Spanish and theatre major at Morningside. During the summer of 2015, she studied at the University of Granada in Spain. She also studied at the University of Havana in Cuba during the fall of 2016.
Congress funds the Fulbright Program through an annual appropriation to the Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations in foreign countries and the United States also provide support.
