Morningside College hosts SMART competition for area high schools
Students from six area high schools participated recently in Morningside College’s Science and Mathematics Academic Reasoning Tournament (SMART) with top team prizes going to East High School in Sioux City and Lawton-Bronson High School.
Students from six area high schools participated recently in Morningside College’s Science and Mathematics Academic Reasoning Tournament (SMART) with top team prizes going to East High School in Sioux City and Lawton-Bronson High School.
Eighty-nine students took part in individual and team competition to demonstrate their knowledge in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Winning students and teams received Morningside College scholarships. Students participating in the competition were from East and West high schools in Sioux City; Lawton-Bronson High School, Lawton, Iowa; OA-BCIG High School, Ida Grove, Iowa; South Sioux City High School, and West Monona High School, Onawa, Iowa.
The Lawton-Bronson team of Aaron Schorg, Marty Riediger, Kylie Hamman and Cody Feddersen took first- and third-place prizes in team events. East High’s team of Hunter Uhl, Aaron Mulvihill, Thomas Burkhart and Adam Amick-Sorvagg took first- and third-place prizes in team events. The West High team of Jose Ayala Garcia, Amanda McKivergan, Colton Berke and David Le took two second-place prizes in team events.
Students taking individual prizes included:
Math – Aaron Schorg from Lawton-Bronson, first; Marty Riediger from Lawton-Bronson, second; Madison Rhee from East High and Jade Thompson from Lawton-Bronson, third-place tie.
Chemistry – David Le from West High, first; Triet Nguyen from West High, second; Jose Ayala from West High and Amanda McKievergan from West High, third-place tie.
Physics – Dalton Rederick from West High, Hunter Uhl from East High and Colton Berke, from West High, three-way tie for first.
Biology – Devin Davidson from Lawton-Bronson, first; McKenna Deaton from East High and Olivia Tidwell from East High, second place tie.
