Morningside College recently received a $10,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grant Program.

Funds will go toward the purchase of a microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, which measures low concentrations of dissolved metals and semi-metals. This device will be used by upper-level chemistry classes and for chemical, biological and environmental research.

“This piece of equipment will allow the college to deliver science courses that better prepare students for working in a modern laboratory or continuing their education at the graduate or professional level,” said John Helms, assistant professor of chemistry at Morningside College.

The Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants are awarded to small college science departments for the purchase of scientific equipment, audio-visual or other teaching aids, or library materials for use in the teaching of science at the undergraduate level.
