Morningside to host Criminal Justice conference

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Department of Social Sciences at Morningside University is excited to host its first Annual Criminal Justice Conference and Career Fair, on Thursday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Yockey Family Room inside Olsen Student Center. This event is free and open to students, alumni, and members of the community.
This event brings together education, awareness, and community collaboration, offering a unique blend of insightful presentations from renowned criminal justice experts and a career fair designed to foster meaningful connections in the field.
“Raising awareness through education provides the community with the knowledge and understanding needed to discern important societal issues,” said Dr. Jack Phan, associate professor of criminal justice.
The conference aims to enhance awareness around pressing issues such as fentanyl, human trafficking, and sexual assault while creating opportunities for future leaders in criminal justice to connect with seasoned professionals.

• 9 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. – Welcome Address from Morningside President Dr. Albert Mosley and Opening Prayer from Pastor Andy Nelson
• 9:15 – 10:30 a.m. – Sgt. Paul Yaneff, “Fentanyl: A Weapon of Mass Destruction”
• 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – Sgt. John Sanders, “Sexual Assault: What Is It?”
• 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. – Detective Michael Sitzman,” “Human Trafficking: Awareness & Prevention”
There will be breaks throughout the conference, as well as lunch provided.
Attendees will have the chance to connect with representatives from local, county, state, and federal law enforcement and criminal justice agencies throughout the day. Whether you’re a student exploring career opportunities or a community member eager to learn more about the justice system, this event offers a unique opportunity to build meaningful connections and uncover pathways in the field.
The event welcomes a diverse audience of current students, alumni, service providers, active-duty personnel, veterans, and community members. Invitations have also been extended to the military, local colleges, high schools, and universities.
