Mustang women lead after day one of Kohawk Invite
Morningside tops a four-team women’s field after Saturday’s action at the Coe Kohawk Invitational collegiate swimming meet.
Morningside College is in first place in the four-team women’s division after Saturday’s action at the Coe College Kohawk Invitational collegiate swim meet.
The Mustangs lead the field with 544 points, followed by Coe, 519.5; Quincy University, 389; and College of Saint Mary, 104.5
Coe holds a 792.5 to 636.5 lead over Morningside in the two-team men’s competition.
The competition will conclude on Sunday.
Suzanna Gonzalez, a junior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., was Saturday’s top performer for the Mustang women with a pair of first place finishes. Gonzalez won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.16 and reigned in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.78 seconds.
Evelyn Edge, a senior from Genoa City, Wis., had a pair of high finishes. Edge finished third in the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:28.89 and placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.13 seconds.
Carly Johnson, a sophomore from Kansas City, Kan., gave the Mustangs a third place finish in the women’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:39.22.
The Mustangs were the runner-up in the women’s 400-yard medley relay, where Deborah Cvrk, a freshman from Sioux City; Jessyca Huff, a freshman from Castle Rock, Colo.; Gonzalez and Edge combined for a time of 4:31.45.
The Mustang men won both of Saturday’s relay events and had five victories in the individual events.
Billy Salber, a freshman from Omaha, Neb., doubled in the men’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.63 and the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.57.
Kyler Alme, a freshman from Bismarck, N.D., won the men’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.98; Connor Bjellum, a freshman from Fargo, N.D., won the men’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.01 seconds, and Lucas Farrington, a sophomore from Rockwell City, Iowa, won the men’s 100-yard individual medley with a time of 57.63.
Morningside won the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.67 from the quartet of Bjellum, Evan Persson, a senior from Blair, Neb.; Jake Kohorst, a freshman from Elk River, Minn.; and John Dieter, a junior from Carroll, Iowa.
Kohorst, Alme, Salber, and Bjellum combined for the winning time of 3:41.14 in the men’s 400-yard medley relay.
