Morningside, who had received votes in the preseason poll but was not ranked, received 190 points for the No. 22 spot, with Keiser (Fla.) earning 527 for its No. 1 ranking.
The women started their season strong, placing first at the Mount Mary Invite, the Morningside Invite, and the Bellevue Invitational. The placed second at the Briar Cliff Invitational, then finished in the top spot at the fall qualifier for the GPAC Championships with a 50 stroke lead over Jamestown in the second spot.
“It was a nice time for them to shoot a school record 295 at the conference tournament. They shattered the old record by 10 shots,” said Mustangs Head Golf Coach Todd Sapp. “Our next three tournaments in January, February and March will be against some of the top rated teams in the country, so we’ll take these fall accomplishments and look to build on them over the upcoming months.”
Leading the charge for the Mustangs have been Laia Badosa, Maria Nava, Maria, Zorrilla, and Sam Knight. Badosa, a freshman from Girona, Spain, was named a GPAC Golfer of the Week for Oct. 1-7 after her outstanding at the GPAC fall qualifier and has had several top five finishes. Nava, a freshman from Monterrey, Mexico; Zorrilla, a sophomore from Torreon, Mexico; and Sam Knight, a sophomore from Onawa, Iowa, have also all had top 10 finishes as individuals and been major contributors to the Mustangs success.
“The women had four wins in their first five tournaments during the fall season, and a runner-up in their only other tournament by only three shots to ninth ranked William Penn. Incoming freshman Maria Nava and Laia Badosoa have really help strengthen our already talented returning group from last years GPAC Championship team,” said Sappl
Look for the Mustangs to be back in action in early 2019.
