Morningside College’s head swimming coach Bryan Farris has announced the names of 15 recruits who will join the Mustang swimming program for the 2018-19 season.

Morningside College’s head swimming coach Bryan Farris has announced the names of 15 recruits who will join the Mustang swimming program for the 2018-19 season.

The Mustangs’ recruits are:

Bryce Clinkenbeard, a freestyler from Denison, Iowa. A 2018 home school graduate, Clinkenbeard plans to pursue a major that will include mathematics. He competes for the Denison Stingrays and his top times were 25.87 in the 50-yard freestyle and 56.43 in the 100-yard freestyle. His sister, Rae, will be a junior on this season’s team.

Ron Defauw, an individual medley and distance freestyle specialist from Rock Springs, Wyo. Defauw is a 2018 graduate of Rock Springs High School, where he helped lead his team to an eighth-place finish at the 2018 Wyoming 4A State Swim Meet. He finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.84) and second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.85). He also swam the backstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay (10th; 1:51.47) and led off the 400-yard freestyle relay (ninth; 3:32.22). While competing at Speedo Sectionals in Federal Way, Wash., in March, Defauw posted personal best times in events that he will swim as a Mustang. Those times were 4:49.47 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:52.26 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 16:57.90 in the mile freestyle, 4:16.97 in the 400-yard individual medley and 1:58.83 in the 200-yard butterfly.  He plans to major in  biological sciences.

Gage Dewsbury is a sprint freestyler with strong butterfly skills from Boise, Idaho. He is a 2018 graduate of Sage International School and is going to be an Agri-business major. Swimming for 5A team champion Boise High School, Dewsbury had a hand in four state titles at the 2017 Idaho 5A State Swimming Championships. He won individual titles in the 50-yard freestyle (21.90) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.25) while anchoring the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:37.74) and leading off the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:14.14) with a lead off split of 47.81. In April, Dewsbury took part in the 2018 YMCA National Championship Swim Meet in Greensboro, N.C., and posted personal best times in additional events that he will swim as a Mustang. They were 1:44.09 in the 200-yard freestyle and 52.93 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Max Edwards is a breaststroker with strong butterfly and individual medley skills from Omaha, Neb. A 2018 graduate of Millard South High School, Edwards helped his team achieve an 11th-place finish at the 2018 Nebraska State High School Swimming Meet. He was 14th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.48, and he finished 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.19 (59.98 in preliminaries). While swimming at 2018 Midwestern Championships in Lincoln, Neb., in March, Edwards posted outstanding times in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.91) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.66). He plans to major in biology.

Haylie Folsom, a freestyler from Atchison, Kan., is a 2018 Maur Hill-Mount Academy graduate who was able to help her team finish fifth in the nine-team field at the 2018 lnter League Championship Swim Meet held in Osawatomie, Kan.. She finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.76) and was part of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:42.47). Folsom plans to major in pre-veterinary medicine.

Monique Garcia is a freestyler from Santa Ana, Calif. She is a 2018 graduate of Valley High School and plans to pursue a nursing degree. In addition to swimming for her high school, she also participated in water polo.

Bryce Griffin, an individual medley and butterfly specialist from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Griffin is a 2018 graduate of Lewis Central High School, where he helped his team achieve a 15th-place finish at the 2018 Iowa State High School Swim Meet. He swam the butterfly leg of the 19th place 200-yard medley relay (1:41.75), and he anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:15.72) to a 12th-place finish. His top individual times from high school were 55.75 in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:08.22 in the 200-yard individual medley and 59.81 in the 100-yard backstroke. While competing at the 2018 Midwestern Championship meet in Lincoln, Neb., in March, Griffin established personal best times in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.84) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.91). He is planning on a double major in mass communications and business.

Kyle Gundersen, a breaststroke/individual medley specialist from Gilbert, Ariz. He is a 2018 graduate of Williams Field High School, where he helped his team achieve a ninth-place finish at the 2017 Division 2 Arizona High School State Swimming Meet. Individually, he finished 15th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.17) and 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.76 (preliminaries 1:02.88). On relays, he swam the breaststroke leg of the ninth place 200-yard medley (1:41.96), and he anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in ninth with a time of 3:21.09. As a strong club swimmer, Gundersen established personal best times in several events at the 2018 Arizona Short Course Championships in Mesa, Ariz., in March. Those times were 2:13.46 in the 200-yard breaststroke, 2:05.44 in the 200-yard individual medley and 4:33.67 in the 400-yard individual medley. He will major in science.

Madeline Keating, a freestyler from Overland Park, Kan., is a 2018 graduate of Olathe North High School. She helped her team finish in seventh place out of a 12-team field in the 2018 Sunflower League Championships. Keating anchored the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.67) to a 10th-place finish, swimming a 28.00 split. Individually, she swam the 50-yard free-style (28.60) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.84]. She plans to major in biological sciences.

Patrick Malnaa is a breaststroke and individual medley specialist from Minot, N.D. A 2018 graduate of Minot High School, Malnaa helped his team win the 2018 North Dakota High School State Swimming & Diving Meet. He finished 14th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.67) and 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.81). Malnaa plans to major in math education.

Samantha Masid, a butterfly specialist and freestyler from Plattsmouth, Neb. She is a 2018 graduate of Bellevue West High School, where she qualified for the 2018 Nebraska State High School Swim Meet in three relays. She swam the butterfly leg of the 23rd place 200-yard medley relay (2:01.64) and anchored both the 200-yard (1:43.77) and 400-yard (3:50.23) freestyle relays. Both relays finished in 16th place, and Masid recorded splits of 26.33 and 57.62, respectively. Masid’s other top times as a high school swimmer include 2:08.28 in the 200-yard freestyle and 2:26.06 in the 200-yard individual medley. She plans to pursue a nursing degree.

Nathan McDonald, a freestyler from Olathe, Kan. McDonald is a 2018 graduate of Olathe North High School, where he was a 2018 qualifier for the Kansas 6A State Swimming & Diving Championships. He anchored the 18th place 200-yard medley relay (1:48.18), swam third on the 19th place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.56), and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.44) that finished in 20th place. McDonald also served as team manager for the Olathe North women’s swim team. He plans to major in history education.

Grace Nordquist is a freestyle and butterfly specialist from Panora, Iowa. She is a 2018 graduate of Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), where she helped her team achieve a third place finish at the 2018 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships. Nordquist participated and scored in eight events at the national meet. Individually, she swam the 100-yard butterfly (eighth; 1:02.60), the 500-yard freestyle (seventh; 5:33.37), the 1,000-yard freestyle (ninth; 11:26.16) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (seventh; 19:11.70). Her relays were the 200-yard medley (third; 1:52.29) swimming the butterfly leg (27.90); the 200-yard freestyle (second; 1:40.61) swimming the second leg (25.94); the 400-yard freestyle (third; 3:41.16) swimming in the second position (57.17); and the 800-yard freestyle (second; 8:17.09), swimming the second leg (2:03.58). Prior to ICCC, she attended Panorama High School in Panora, Iowa, and she swam for Carroll (Iowa) High School. She plans to major in mass communications.

James Spicer, a distance freestyler with butterfly and backstroke skills from Rock Springs, Wyo. A 2018 graduate of Rock Springs High School, he helped his team achieve an eighth place finish at the 2018 Wyoming 4A State Swim Meet. Spicer finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.99 (1:49.92 preliminaries) and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.67). He swam the anchor leg of the eighth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.84) and swam in the second position of the ninth place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.22). Other top times by Spicer as a high school swimmer include 56.11 in the 100-yard butterfly and 58.35 in the 100-yard backstroke. Spicer also served as team manager for the Rock Springs High School women’s swim team. He plans to major in computer science.

Josh Sunberg, a distance freestyler from Red Oak, Iowa, is a 2018 graduate of Iowa Central Community College and helped his team to a fifth place finish at the 2018 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships. Sunberg participated in seven events at nationals. Individually, he swam the 200-yard freestyle (12th; 1:52.27), the 500-yard freestyle (18th; 5:14.42), the 1,000-yard freestyle (15th; 10:46.51) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15th; 18:35.44). His relays were the 200-yard freestyle (15th; 1:27.45), swimming the third position (22.63); the 400-yard freestyle (second; 3:11.91), swimming the third position (50.05); and the 800-yard freestyle (eighth; 7:38.95), swimming the anchor position (1:51.87). Prior to ICCC, he attended Red Oak High School and swam for Lewis Central High School. He plans to major in applied agricultural and food studies.
