Mustangs announce wrestling recruits
Morningside head wrestling coach Jake Stevenson announced the names of 18 recruits who will join the Mustangs for the 2014-15 season.
Morningside College head wrestling coach Jake Stevenson has announced the Mustangs’ 2014 recruiting class.
The recruits are:
Derik Bailey, a 149-157 pounder from Smithland, Iowa. Bailey is a 2014 graduate of Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto High School, where he had a 45-5 record and placed seventh in the Class 1A 138 lb. division of the state tournament as a senior.
He had a 39-7 record as a junior and a 33-11 mark as a sophomore and was a Class 1A 132 lb. state qualifier both seasons.
Calvin Buchanan, a 184 pounder from Sioux City. Buchanan is a 2014 graduate of Sioux City East High School, where he had a 39-10 record and placed sixth in the Class 3A 182 lb. division of the state tournament this past season.
He went 24-18 and was a Class 3A 170 lb. state qualifier as a junior.
Cody Cline, a 141 pounder from Lenox, Iowa, who will join the Mustangs with junior athletic eligibility as a transfer from Iowa Lakes Community College. Cline had a 13-29 record in two seasons at Iowa Lakes, including a 6-15 mark this past winter.
He is a 2012 graduate of Lenox High School.
Daniel Czarske, a 149-157 pounder from Torrance, Calif. Czarske is a 2014 graduate of West Torrance High School, where he compiled a 79-29 record over his junior and senior seasons. As a senior he went 39-9, was a league champion, and finished fourth in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). He had a 35-15 record and was a CIF qualifier as a junior.
Caleb Deemer, a 184-197 pounder from Palmer, Alaska. Deemer is a 2014 graduate of Palmer High School, where he was a three-year varsity letterwinner. Deemer was a 195 lb. region champion and the Class 4A state runner-up this past season.
He placed third in the Class 4A 182 lb. division of the state tournament as a junior.
Steffon Fassett, a 149 pounder from Grandview, Mo. Fassett is a 2014 graduate of Lee’s Summit West High School, where he had a 36-15 record and was a Class 4 145 lb. state tournament qualifier as a senior.
Jayce Frank, a 165 pounder from Sioux City. Frank is a 2014 graduate of Sioux City North High School, where he had a 22-16 record and finished fifth in the 170 lb. division at his Class 3A district tournament.
Steven Garcia, a 141-149 pounder from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Garcia is a 2014 graduate of Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, where he had a 47-7 record and was a Class 2A 145 lb. state tournament qualifier.
He had a 47-6 record and placed fifth in the Class 2A 138 lb. division of the state tournament as a junior. Garcia went 40-10 and was a Class 2A 132 lb. state qualifier as a sophomore.
Dalton Hanson, a 133 pounder from Sioux City. Hanson is a 2014 graduate of Sioux City North High School, where he had a 44-5 record and placed third in the 132 lb. division of his Class 3A district tournament.
He posted a 42-11 record and was a Class 3A 126 lb. state tournament qualifier as a junior and went 32-18 and was a Class 3A 113 lb. state qualifier as a sophomore.
Tucker Hicks, a 125 pounder from Hershey, Neb. Hicks is a 2014 graduate of Hershey High School, where he had a 40-6 record and was a Class C 106 lb. state tournament qualifier.
He had a 30-14 record and placed sixth in the Class C 106 lb. division of the state tournament as a junior.
Cole Mills, a 125 pounder from Akron, Iowa. Mills is a 2014 graduate of Hinton High School, where he was a state runner-up after he dropped a 4-3 decision against Nick Williams of Lisbon in this year’s Class 1A 120 lb. championship match. He finished the season with a record of 47-4.
Logan Moore, a 174-184 pounder from Onawa, Iowa. Moore is a 2014 graduate of West Monona High School, where he had a 50-1 record and placed third in the Class 1A 170 lb. division of the state tournament. His only loss of the season came against Dylan Windfield of Alburnett in the state tournament semifinals.
Moore was also a state tournament place winner as a junior when he had a 51-4 record en route to a fourth place finish in the Class 1A 152 lb. division. He had a 22-8 record and was a Class 1A 126 lb. state qualifier as a sophomore and went 36-10 and was a Class 1A 119 lb. state qualifier as a freshman.
Tyler Nguyen, a 197 pounder from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Nguyen is a 2013 graduate of Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, where he had a 41-9 record and placed fifth in the Class 2A 220 lb. division of the state tournament as a senior.
He was a Class 2A 220 lb. sectional tournament champion as a junior.
Alexander Schmitz, a 133 pounder from Carroll, Iowa. Schmitz is a 2014 graduate of Carroll Kuemper Catholic High School, where he had a 38-7 record and was a Class 2A 132 lb. state tournament qualifier.
Schmitz posted a 42-4 record and was a Class 1A 132 lb. state qualifier as a junior.
Cory Sornson, a 165 pounder from Nebraska City, Neb. Sornson is a 2014 graduate of Nebraska City High School, where he had a 46-5 record and placed fourth at this year’s state tournament in the Class B 152 lb. division.
He had a 48-6 record and placed fourth in the Class B 145 lb. division of the state tournament as a junior and went 35-15 and was a Class B 145 lb. state qualifier as a sophomore.
Drake Swedlund, a 157 pounder from Sioux City, who will join the Mustangs with sophomore athletic eligibility as a transfer from Buena Vista University. Swedlund had a 5-13 record with one fall during the 2013-14 campaign and led the Beavers in victories in the 157 lb. division.
He is a 2013 graduate of Sioux City East High School, where he set a school record with 37 reversals in a season. Swedlund had a 37-13 record and was a Class 3A 152 lb. state tournament qualifier as a senior and went 34-17 and was a Class 3A 170 lb. state qualifier as a junior.
Trevor Wheelock, a 165-174 pounder from Boone, Iowa. Wheelock is a 2014 graduate of Ogden High School, where he had 25-8 record this past season. Wheelock was a Class 1A 170 lb. sectional tournament champion and finished third at his district tourney.
Andrew White, a 157-165 pounder from Spencer, Iowa. White is a 2014 graduate of Spencer High School, where he had a 38-13 record and was a Class 3A 152 lb. state tournament qualifier as a senior.
Morningside won its fourth consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) championship and had a 12-6 dual record during the 2013-14 campaign. The Mustangs, who won the GPAC with a perfect 7-0 league mark, won their final nine duals of the season.
