Morningside lost 9-0 against 11th-ranked Westmont in the first round of the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship tournament.

Morningside bowed out of the 2014 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship tournament with a 9-0 loss against 11th-ranked Westmont in Tuesday’s first round action in Mobile, Ala.

The Warriors will take a 12-12 record into Wednesday’s second round action against seventh-ranked Savannah Art & Design.

Morningside, making its first-ever national tournament appearance, bowed out with a record of 12-5. The Mustangs were this year’s GPAC regular season and post-season tournament champions.

Westmont, making its eighth national tournament appearance, won for the sixth time in its last eight outings since it started the season with a 6-10 record. The Warriors, who were NAIA National Champions in 1982, improved their all-time record to 3-7 since the NAIA National Championship tourney was changed to a dual meet format.

Audri Swisher made the Mustangs’ best showing in the singles competition with a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Kate Stratman in the second flight. Stratman is ranked 50th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Her older sister, sixth-ranked Lauren Stratman, improved her season’s record to 21-2 with a win against the Mustangs’ Katie Hanson at No. 1 singles.
