Morningside had place winning performances in the men’s 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays on Friday at the NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships.

Morningside College placed in the men’s 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays during Friday’s action at the 2016 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in Columbus, Ga.

The Mustangs placed 12th in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.81 from the quartet of John Dieter, a sophomore from Carroll, Iowa; Michael Andrlik, a senior from Ralston, Neb.; Tim Cohoon, a freshman from Buffalo, Wyo.; and Evan Persson, a junior from Blair, Neb. The Mustangs moved up one place in the finals after they had qualified with the 13th fastest time of 1:28.28 in the prelims.

Morningside placed 14th in the 400-yard medley relay final with a time of 3:38.05 from Tyler Halligan, a junior from North Platte, Neb.; Andrlik, Alex Paulsen, a junior from Carroll, Iowa; and Persson.

The Mustangs’ individual highlight of the day came from Evelyn Edge, a junior from Genoa City, Minn., who broke a school record while competing in the women’s 200-yard freestyle prelims. Edge finished 18th overall in the prelims with a time of 1:58.80 to top her own former school record clocking of 1:59.48 she set earlier this season.

Morningside had several other swimmers compete in Friday’s individual event prelims.

Halligan finished 20th in the men’s 100-yard backstroke prelims with a time of 55.39 seconds.

Tracy Gates, a junior from Escondido, Calif., finished 21st and Alisia Woodward, a freshman from Waterloo, Iowa, was 23rd in the women’s 400-yard individual medley prelims with times of 5:02.67 and 5:11.87, respectively.

Veronica Mullen, a freshman from Omaha, Neb., finished 27th in the women’s 100-yard backstroke prelims with a time of 1:03.10.

Andrlik finished 28th in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:01.80.

Paulsen finished 29th in the men’s 100-yard butterfly prelims with a time of 53.42 seconds.

Morningside finished 19th in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay prelims with a time of 1:46.24 from Mullen, Alyssa Nehring, a sophomore from Humboldt, Iowa, Gates, and Edge.

The Mustangs were disqualified in the women’s 400-yard medley relay prelims.
