Mustangs reign at GPAC Qualifier #3
Morningside’s women’s golf team had three of the top five individual scores in the field to win GPAC Qualifier #3.
Morningside College’s women’s golf team posted three of the top five individual scores in the field en route to the team championship at Wednesday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Golf Qualifier #3 tournament played at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.
The Mustangs were led by Myla Brown, a freshman from Sioux Falls, S.D., who carded a 79 to finish as the runner-up individual medalist behind Allison Depko of Midland University, who claimed top honors with a 78.
Alexandra Mankle, a freshman from Milford, Iowa, finished right behind Brown with a 79 to tie for third place in the individual standings.
The Mustangs also received a top five finish from Cheyanne Becker, a freshman from Waukee, Iowa, who carded an 81 to finish in a tie for fifth place.
Mikaela Livengood, a freshman from Eagle Grove, Iowa, completed the Mustangs’ team score with an 85.
The Mustangs finished with a team total of 325 for a five-stroke margin over runner-up Dakota Wesleyan (330). The Mustangs’ 325 was two strokes off the Morningside school record of 323 set in 2003 at Sioux City’s Green Valley Golf Course.
Morningside, which also won the team title at this fall’s GPAC Qualifier #1, was in fourth place in the combined GPAC Qualifier scoring, 17 strokes off the pace of first place Mount Marty, after the two fall GPAC Qualifier tourneys. The Mustangs are still in fourth place, but made up 14 strokes on the Lancers in GPAC Qualifier #3. Mount Marty leads a tight race in the 12-team GPAC field with a score of 1017, followed by Dakota Wesleyan at 1018, Nebraska Wesleyan at 1019, and Morningside at 1020.
Mankle is eighth in the GPAC individual standings with a total of 249 strokes. Brown is in ninth place at 251 and Becker is 10th at 253.
GPAC Qualifier #4 will be held on May 2 in Mitchell, S.D.
