CHICAGO, ILL. – A pair of 30-point-plus efforts from sophomore guard Sierra Mitchell (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) and junior forward Sydney Hupp (O’Neill, Neb.) lifted No. 11-ranked Morningside College Friday, Nov. 2.
The duo each totaled 31 points against the run-and-gun Olivet Nazarene University in the opener for both sides at the Great Plains Athletic Conference – Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Challenge hosted by St. Xavier University. Mitchell poured in seven three-point baskets while Hupp missed only four field goal attempts, hitting on 14 of 18 tries, to aid a massive Maroon edge in the paint (56-24) that led to a 100-88 victory.
Other top numbers for head coach Jamie Sale’s squad came from Hupp who was just one rebound shy of a double-double (nine) and junior guard Jordyn Moser (Harlan, Iowa) who tallied nine assists and three steals. Morningside used a key 25-10 run after trailing 41-34 late in the second period to turn the tables on No. 18-ranked ONU.
Mside’s weekend in the Windy City continues Saturday, Nov. 3. They tackle No. 4-ranked and challenge host St. Xavier University at SXU’s Shannon Center with a 3 p.m. tip-off.
