Mustangs’ Freshman Fab Fives makes it three in a row
Morningside’s women’s golf team won its third tournament title in a row.
Morningside made it three tournament titles in a row when the Mustangs reigned at the Briar Cliff Lila Frommelt Fall Classic women’s golf tournament held Friday and Saturday at Sioux City’s Green Valley Golf Course.
The Mustangs’ freshman Fab Five, consisting of a redshirt freshman and four true freshmen, are undefeated through three tournaments this fall.
Morningside entered Saturday’s final round in a tie with Concordia for top honors after both teams fired opening round 337s. The Mustangs lowered their score to a 332 on Saturday for the top score in the field. Morningside finished with a two-day total of 669 for an eight-stroke cushion over runner-up Dakota Wesleyan with a 677. Concordia faded to a 345 on Saturday and finished third with a 682.
Alexandria Mankle was the Mustangs’ top finisher with a pair of 82s to finish in a tie for third place in the individual standings. Myla Brown and Cheyanne Becker finished in a tie for seventh at 170. Brown had rounds of 82 and 88, while Becker came back from an opening round 90 with an 80 for the Mustangs’ top Saturday score. Liz Thies finished in a tie for 13th with scores of 90 and 82 for a 172 and Mikaela Livengood was 16th with rounds of 83 and 90 for a 173.
Nathalie Sanchez was the top finisher for the Mustangs’ junior varsity team with scores of 94 and 89 for 33rd place.
