Mustangs sweep player of the week awards
Morningside swept the GPAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Awards.
Tyler Borchers, a 6-7 sophomore forward from Le Mars, Iowa, and Madison Braun, a 5-8 senior guard from Bellevue, Neb., are the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for Nov. 27-Dec. 3.
Borchers averaged 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and made 21 of 30 field goal attempts for a sizzling 70.0 percent while leading the 15th-ranked Mustangs to victories against No. 1 Northwestern College and Midland University.
Borchers had game-high totals of 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the Mustangs to an 86-71 upset victory against Northwestern to hand the No. 1-ranked Red Raiders their first loss of the season. He led the Mustangs in scoring for the fourth game in a row with another 23-point performance behind an 11-for-14 shooting performance from the field in a 92-85 win against Midland.
Braun averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game to help lead the 10th-ranked Mustangs to victories against No. 15 Northwestern and Midland. She made 12 of 21 field goal attempts for 57.1 percent, including an eight-for-14 shooting display for 57.1 percent from the 3-point arc in the two contests.
Braun contributed 18 points, seven rebounds and a game-high five steals in the Mustangs’ 76-65 victory against Northwestern and scored 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals in an 86-77 win against Midland. Braun was the key performer in the win against Midland when she scored 14 points in a game-changing third quarter when the Mustangs outscored the Warriors 29-18 to take a lead they never relinquished after the teams had battled to a 39-39 standoff at the intermission.
