Morningside held high scoring Northwestern to its lowest point total of the season in an 86-71 triumph against the Red Raiders.

Fifteenth-ranked Morningside shot 55.6 percent from the field and held high scoring Northwestern to its lowest offensive output of the season when it upset the No. 1-ranked Red Raiders 86-71 in Wednesday’s GPAC men’s basketball game in Sioux City.

The Red Raiders, who entered the game averaging 96.3 points per game, shot just 43.3 percent while suffering their first loss of the season after nine previous victories.

Tyler Borchers went for a double double with game-high totals of 23 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists. Brody Egger was right behind with 21 points behind a four-for-six shooting performance from the 3-point arc and Trystan Cummins provided 14 points off the bench for the first double figure scoring effort of his Morningside career.

Pierce Almond just missed double figures with nine points, followed by Alex Borchers with seven points, Matthew Hahn with five, Trey Brown with four and Ben Hoskins with three.

Colton Kooima led the Red Raiders with 22 points, of which 17 came in the second half.

Borchers’ 10 rebounds paced the Mustangs to a 34-25 advantage on the boards. Almond was next with seven rebounds.

Northwestern began the game with back-to-back 3-pointers by Kooima and Riley Francis to take an early 6-0 lead. Morningside tied the score at 11 on a basket by Cummins with 12:38 left in the first half and took the lead for good when a layup by Tyler Borchers put the hosts in front 13-11 with 11:05 left.

The Mustangs took a 35-28 advantage into the intermission and eventually opened a pair of 17-point leads in the final two minutes.

Morningside will take a 6-1 record into a 4 p.m. Saturday home game against Midland.
