Mustangs win GPAC Qualifier #3
Morningside reigned at GPAC Men’s Golf Qualifier #3 to move up two spots in the combined team scoring.
Morningside College won the team title at GPAC Men’s Golf Qualifier #3 held Monday at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
The Mustangs carded a 311 to edge runner-up Midland University by two strokes for the team title.
Morningside moved up two spots in the combined team scoring from sixth place to fourth place with one GPAC Qualifier remaining on the 2015-16 schedule. The Mustangs’ combined score of 921 gave them a four-stroke cushion over Dakota Wesleyan University for fourth place and left them nine shots out of second place behind Doane College and Midland, who are tied for second at 912. Northwestern College leads the field with a 904.
Ferran Cortilla, a freshman from Barcelona, Spain, led the Mustangs at GPAC Qualifier #3 with a score of 74 to share individual medalist honors with Renen Sahr of Midland and Nolan Zikas of Concordia.
The Mustangs also had top 10 finishes from Zach Ward, a sophomore from Waterloo, Iowa, and Cody Holck, a freshman from Ankeny, Iowa, who each carded 77s to tie for seventh place in the individual standings.
Morningside completed its team score with an 83 from John Burns, a sophomore from Algona, Iowa.
Cortilla’s performance in GPAC Qualifier #3 moved him into third place in a tight race for GPAC medalist honors. Cortilla has a three-tournament total of 221 strokes to leave him just two shots out of first place behind Mack Alspaugh of Doane and one shot out of second place behind Sahr.
The Mustangs will compete in the Briar Cliff Invitational on April 18 and 19 in North Sioux City, S.D.
