A new chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society, was recently installed at Morningside College.

Phi Alpha Theta promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. The society has over 350,000 members, including undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history, at over 860 local chapters.

Membership is granted based on high academic achievement in history and in general. The push for a chapter came from Morningside students, and it took two years for approval. Dr. Greg Guelcher, professor of history, is the faculty adviser for the new chapter.

The Morningside chapter hopes to better publicize the discipline of history on campus, as well as encourage current members to present research at conferences. Additionally, it is hoped the chapter will enhance the fellowship within the department.
