O’Neill named a first-team All-American
Steve O’Neill was named to the first team of the 2014-15 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball All-America selection.
Steve O’Neill, a 6-0 senior guard from Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been named to the 2014-15 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball All-America First Team.
He became the first men’s basketball player in Morningside history to be named a first-team NAIA Division II All-American.
O’Neill was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this past season with an average of 18.3 points per game as well as the team leader with 124 assists for an average of 3.8 per game. He made a team-high 70 3-point field goals in 183 attempts for 38.3 percent and was one of the top free throw shooters in the NAIA Division II ranks with a team-high 145 free throws in 164 attempts for 88.4 percent to rank third nationally in free throw accuracy. O’Neill made 195 of 459 overall field goal attempts for 42.5 percent. He finished second on the Mustangs with 46 steals for an average of 1.4 per game.
O’Neill led the Mustangs with 31 double figure scoring performances, including a team-high 13 scoring performances of 20 points or more. He was the Mustangs’ leading scorer in 14 of their 33 contests, including a career-high 31-point performance in a 112-100 victory against William Penn University on Oct. 31 for Morningside’s top individual scoring performance of the campaign.
He finished his career as the 18th leading all-time scorer in Morningside history with 1139 career points.
Morningside posted a 28-5 record, including a 17-3 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) to share the league’s regular season championship with Dakota Wesleyan University. The Mustangs advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, where they bowed out with a 72-70 second round loss against the University of Saint Francis.
