Geoff Harkness, assistant professor of sociology, and a student recently co-authored a paper that was published in the peer-reviewed journal Sociology Compass, and they will present the paper at the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting in March.

Geoff Harkness, assistant professor of sociology at Morningside College, and a student recently co-authored a paper that was published in the peer-reviewed journal Sociology Compass, and they will present the paper at the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting in March.

The article by Harkness and Morningside College senior Natasha Hongsermeier is “Female Sports as Non-Movement Resistance in the Middle East and North Africa.” It examines how women’s athletics serve as a platform for feminist social movements in these parts of the world. 

Harkness has taught sociology at Morningside College since the fall of 2014. He recently published his first book, “Chicago Hustle and Flow: Gangs, Gangsta Rap, and Social Class.” Harkness received his doctorate in sociology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Hongsermeier is the daughter of Ivan and Jennifer Hongsermeier of Phillips, Neb.
