Trent Solsma is the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week.

Trent Solsma, a 6-0, 215 lb. sophomore quarterback from Dakota Dunes, S.D., was named the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the fifth-ranked Mustangs’ 62-3 victory against Hastings College last Saturday in Hastings, Neb.

Solsma completed 17 of 19 pass attempts for 411 yards and five touchdowns. Solsma matched his career high with the five touchdown passes and the 411 yards passing was the second highest total of his career. Solsma, who also had five TD passes in the Mustangs’ 69-7 rout of nationally ranked Doane earlier this season, threw touchdown passes of 40 and 81 yards to Michael Whitehead, 28 yards to Zach Knicky, 25 yards to Dom Flemister, and 21 yards to Tanner Ver Steeg. Solsma completed his first 13 pass attempts of the game and also had a four-yard run to finish with 415 yards total offense.

Solsma has completed 151 of 221 pass attempts (68.3 percent) for 2388 yards with 25 touchdowns and only three interceptions in his first season as the Mustangs’ starting quarterback. Solsma has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of his eight starts. He is third in the nation in pass efficiency with a rating of 193.7, sixth in passing with an average of 298.5 yards per game, and 10th in total offense with an average of 301.9 yards per game.

Morningside will take an 8-1 record into this Saturday’s regular season finale when the Mustangs host Northwestern College in a 1 p.m. game at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
